About Us
When it comes to family fitness and recreation, no one does it better than the YMCA. A nonprofit organization, the YMCA of Southern Nevada has been setting the pace for family health and wellness since 1944 – two years before Bugsy Siegel opened the Flamingo Hotel.
With age comes wisdom; we continue to be dedicated to building strong kids, strong families and strong communities, but we’re doing it in innovative ways to meet the demands of today’s dynamic family. From toddlers to grandparents of toddlers, everyone feels at home at the YMCA. It’s no surprise considering our four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility are at the heart of everything we do. YMCA members of every age and fitness level value our values. It’s the tie that binds our YMCA family together. It’s what makes us special and keeps our loyal members coming back for more.
Each year, nearly 25,000 Southern Nevadans – parents, teens, infants, seniors and at-risk youth – are enriched through the YMCA. Residents access hundreds of award-winning aquatic, health and fitness, youth and family, and sporting activities led by trained YMCA instructors and volunteers. In the process, they meet friends, enjoy social activities and make memories that last a lifetime.
Our three YMCAs are conveniently located near schools, highways and thriving neighborhoods. And they’ll “wow” you. Water parks, indoor and outdoor pools, fully equipped fitness centers, cycling studios, basketball courts, gymnasiums, racquetball and tennis courts, aerobics and yoga studios, computer learning centers and a 34-foot rock wall (no kidding!) are among the amenities. Locker rooms, kids and baby gyms, lounges, playgrounds and even a skate park add to the picture.
No one is turned away because of an inability to pay. The annual Strong Kids Campaign financial assistance program makes it possible. Thanks to generous donors, we’re able to provide recreational, educational and fitness opportunities to those who might not otherwise have access. One sneaker size doesn’t fit all, and the same goes for our financial assistance program. That’s why we’re always available to lend an ear and design assistance programs to match needs.
We’re proud that our roots date back to 1944, but London has a century on us. The worldwide YMCA movement got its start in England in 1844. Today we’re one of more than 2,600 YMCAs. Together we comprise the largest nonprofit community service organization in the United States, and the impact is staggering. YMCAs work to meet the health and human service needs of 21 million men, women and children in 10,000 communities. Like all YMCAs, ours is governed by a local volunteer board of directors who make decisions based on community needs.
Fun Fact: While we love the Village People’s disco anthem “YMCA,” you can’t stay at ours. In the early days of the movement, dormitories were designed into YMCA buildings and staying at the YMCA was popular through the 1950s. The song is number 7 on VH1’s list of The 100 Greatest Dance Songs of the 20th Century. Who knew!
